Trakai is actually a city on the water and very frequently mentioned in the historical past, in legends about the city, and this time is one of the most frequently visited places by tourists in Lithuania.
The Island Castle is one of the most main tourist attractions in the center of the country, the pride of Lithuania. It is the only water castle in all of Eastern Europe. It stands on one of many island of 'Galves Lake'.

The castle was built as a defensive fortress. After the battle of Zalgiris (1410) the castle lost its defensive purpose. It became the Grand Duke's residence. October 27, 1403, Lithuania's Grand Duke Vytautas died in the Trakai Island Castle.

Later the castle was used as a prison. In the 17th century the castle was completely abandoned. From 1962 the castle was established as a historical museum. Today the Gotic castle's halls are used for concerts and meetings.
